While our friends were visiting in July, we decided to explore some of the quirky places Berlin has to offer. One of those is a fantastically bizarre and difficult mini-golf course at the old Tempelhof Airport.
The airport itself has a pretty interesting history. It was first designated as an airport back in 1923. It was one of Berlin’s first airports, Lufthansa was founded there, was the center of the Berlin Airlift and is currently being used as an emergency refugee shelter. In 2010, the airport field became Berlin’s largest public park, now called Tempelhofer Feld. It hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year, and is also home to this wonderful artistic mini-golf course.
The Nuture ART project is described as an interactive art installation that is played like a miniature golf course. International artists created these works of art, and they address the crucial issues of energy, resources, climate and sustainability. The pieces are built from recycled goods and vary dramatically in their difficulty level.
Each hole is a new adventure! The first hole (in the first picture) requires you to hit the ball into the first metal box, and then you push a button which fills the second box with water and begins to tip the whole contraption.
Moving through the course, there are metal puzzles where you have to get the ball through the right hole, a deconstructed refrigerator, and you even have to get the ball into a toilet, which you flush to finish!
The final hole causes a flame to ignite inside the metal globe, which is a pretty exciting way to end things.
The whole environment is fun. Because some of the holes are so challenging, most people don’t play the course in order, and there’s a strong community vibe with group efforts to get through the course. Just don’t expect to play your best game here…Some of the holes require extreme luck, or creativity.
I highly recommend checking out this Mini ART golf course, if you’re looking for something different to do in Berlin. It’s the most relaxed and silly mini-golf I think I’ve ever played. Plus you can always drink a beer while you play!
